Storms are a part of life on the coast. That's why Beachtown has been implementing the FORTIFIED Home™ for safer living program developed by the Institute for Business and Home Safety. This national, inspection-based initiative ensures new buildings are more resistant to destructive forces such as hurricanes. Construction of Beachtown’s first homes started in 2005. Soon after, Hurricane Rita and Katerina in 2005 served as reminders that homes on the coast ought to be built much stronger and responsibly than the then codes required. Immediately thereafter, Beachtown as a community adopted IBHS’ rigorous standards to build homes well above FEMA's required base flood elevations and the applicable codes for wind resistance. In 2005, an architectural charrette was held to address the elevated scales of these homes to friendly, walkable and historic-based facades. Beachtown follows IBHS to implement its most up-to-date standards. Beachtown currently is building homes to resist winds up to 175 MPH. While no one can challenge the forces of nature during the most devastating moments, responsibly-designed buildings can create a feasible balance between structural integrity and economic well being. This additional step provides better peace of mind for owners and helps set Beachtown apart from many other Gulf coast communities.
